What should I know after a car accident in Los Angeles?

After a Los Angeles car crash, get medical care, report the collision, and keep every record tied to the crash. California generally gives you two years from the date of the crash to file an injury lawsuit, and comparative fault rules mean you can still recover even if you were partly at fault.

How long do I have to file a car accident claim in California?

California generally allows two years from the date of the crash for an injury claim, and three years for property damage. Claims against a public entity have a much shorter deadline, often six months.

What if I was partly at fault?

California uses pure comparative negligence. Your recovery is reduced by your share of fault, but being partly at fault does not bar a claim.

Should I talk to the other driver’s insurance company?

You are not required to give a recorded statement to the other driver’s insurer. It is reasonable to get legal advice before you do.
